WhatsApp updated to Material Design; Download it now

The most popular messaging application WhatsApp has got a design update. The design changes are in line with the Material Design approach that Google has taken with Android Lollipop. This gives it a refreshing change from older design which was used since 2013.

There are lots of visual changes in the app when compared to the older Holo Style UI. The first screen after opening the app has bright colours which is refreshing when compared to the grey theme earlier which looked boring. The chats that are unread now have a brighter green notification indicator next to it.

On opening a specific chat Window there are lots of tiny changes there as well. For those who haven’t noticed the text input box is redesigned. The voice message button is more prominent now and it changes to the send button once you start typing. Another cool change is the add media button, clicking it displays all the options along with new buttons.

There are a whole lot of minor changes that have been carried out to make the overall experience better. For those using devices on Android Lollipop will love the update as it’ll make the interface feel in line with the design of the device. For those who aren’t on Lollipop get to try one more app with a revamped interface.

The app is currently available on WhatsApp’s official site and users wanting to try will have to update the app manually by installing the apk file. The version number for the new app is 2.12.38 and since it is available on the official site it is completely safe to use. For users who don’t want to install the apk will have to wait for the version to be pushed to the Google Play Store.
