Nokia Lumia 638 – The Best Windows Phone Under Rs 10,000

Nokia Lumia 638 – The Best Windows Phone Under Rs. 10,000Nokia has been a household name in India for the past couple of years. With Nokia choosing to go with Windows, it lost quite a lot of users. Windows was a hit and miss for Nokia, with the growth of Android throughout the world. Nokia did try going that way with the Nokia X and the Nokia XL which generated a lot of curiosity for a loyalist who wanted to own a Nokia Android smartphone. They didn’t really do as well as they were hoping for. Ultimately Nokia’s mobile division was acquired by Microsoft and now Nokia has come up with what looks like the best Windows phone under 10,000 rupees.

The Nokia Lumia 638 was a device that was introduced before the Microsoft-Nokia deal. Hence it still has the Nokia branding despite Microsoft selling it. Whats so good about the Nokia 638 you might ask— Read on.

Nokia Lumia 638

Design and Display

The Lumia 638 is designed like every other Lumia out there, it is simple yet classy and uses high quality materials. It has a 4.5 inch display with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels and a decent pixel density of 221 PPI. The pixel density looks just about acceptable for a screen of that size and the content should be fairly readable, although not as crisp as smartphones with 1280 x 720 pixel displays. The screen size is just about right for people who are upgrading from feature phones.

Specs Inside

While the phone looks good, the processing is taken care of by a 1.2GHz Quad Core Snapdragon 400 processor with 1GB of RAM. Its the same processor-RAM combination like the Moto G but at a lower price. The Lumia 638 runs on Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Cyan. There are decent number of apps on the Windows Store currently with popular ones being added soon. Google Apps like Gmail, Youtube etc are not available on the Windows Phone but there are other alternative or third-party apps available.

For example, Nokia Here Maps comes preloaded on the phone and has the capability of offline navigation. The phone has a decent 8GB of internal storage and a MicroSD card slot which accepts cards up to 128GB.

Camera

The phone has a 5 megapixel autofocus camera at the back but oddly other than the missing flash, there isn’t a front camera either (ironic since high quality video calling is one of the advertised features of 4G, which this phone supports). The competitors from the Android team have got better camera sensors, front facing camera and almost all come with a flash. The camera does video recording but not Full HD video which other phones like the Spice Dream Uno are capable of.

Other Feature

The phone uses a Micro SIM and is supports 2G,3G and 4G LTE as mentioned before, this is the cheapest Windows Phone to sport 4G LTE. There are a host of connectivity options which include Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0 connectivity, WiFi and WiFi Hotspot capabilities upto 8 devices.

Overall the phone provides just about acceptable hardware at an affordable price. For those who want to try out a 4G ready Windows Phone, this phone is their only bet. The Nokia Lumia 638 priced at Rs.8299 in India and the product is available exclusively on Amazon.
