Samsung Back With Two New Giants, the Galaxy S6 And Galaxy S6 Edge [MWC2015]
With the MWC underway at Barcelona, all eyes were on Samsung to unveil the next Galaxy device. The last one, the Galaxy S5 wasn’t a disaster because of which Samsung was under pressure to deliver a hit. Samsung has gone ahead with two device launches at the event, namely the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. The devices weren’t completely unknown though, we knew it was time for the next Galaxy device and multiple leaks revealed the two devices. Now that these two devices are officially announced, lets have a look at them.
Samsung Galaxy S6
The Galaxy S6 has a slightly different design than its predecessors. The device has a glass back and a metallic frame with rounded edges, a major improvement over the older models that used plastics. It has a 5.1 Inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, which takes the pixel density up to 577 PPI. The pixel density is impressive and with the AMOLED panel the output would be pretty vibrant. The phone has Gorilla Glass 4 at the front and back to offer good protection all around.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge
The Galaxy S6 Egde is a slightly different model launched alongside the S6. Unlike the Galaxy Note Edge, the S6 Edge does not have a secondary display at the corner. The glass is curved at both the edges and its stunning to look at. The curved display merges with the body design giving it a very premium look. The S6 also has the same 5.1 inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 with a pixel density of 577PPI. Samsung chose to use the dual edges to deliver notifications and the same can be seen in the official video.
The specifications for both the devices are quite common, under the display ticks an Octa Core Exynos Processor. It is the industry’s first 14nm processor and has 4 cores clocked at 2.1GHz and the 4 cores at 1.5GHz. Coupled with the processor is 3GB LPDDR4 (Low Power DDR) RAM which is fast and energy efficient. Samsung has removed all the bloatware and loaded a minimalistic TouchWIZ UI on top of Android 5.0.2. This not only helps with speed and device storage, it also enable Samsung to roll out updates faster.
At the back, both the devices sport a 16 megapixel Sony IMX240 sensor, its the same camera sensor from the Galaxy Note 4. The camera can record 4K video at 30FPS, Samsung has used a wider F1.9 aperture now compared to F2.2 on the Note. The rear camera also has Optical Image Stabilization which ensures that the images come out shake free. At the front, both the devices have a 5 megapixel camera made by Samsung themselves, this camera also has a wide F1.9 aperture. Samsung has also placed a fingerprint scanner on the home button of the device, so just like the iPhone you can use your finger to unlock the device.
Both the devices have NFC, an Infrared remote and are 4G LTE enabled. Unlike the older Galaxy smartphones both the devices have non removable batteries and no MicroSD card slot.
The phones come in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB variants, as for the battery the Galaxy S6 has a 2550mAh non removable battery whereas the S6 Edge has a 2600mAh battery. Both the phones are wireless charging compatible and support multiple charging standards.
Samsung’s S6 twins represent the best that Android has on offer as they go against the Apple iPhone. The 32GB variant of Galaxy S6 is listed at EUR 699 (approximately Rs. 48,300) and the Galaxy S6 Edge at EUR 849 (approximately Rs. 58,600).
